For more creative teams, let them travel – e-sphere workation in Malaga

The better you feel, the better you’ll work. That’s an important part of our manifesto.

In e-sphere we not only believe in personal freedom, but also make sure to provide everyone with the best work environment and an atmosphere of respect and cooperation. We do not take things for granted; we experiment with our development process to constantly improve our teams and ourselves.

When it comes to creativity, there is one thing more beneficial to the cognitive process than any other aspect – travel. But it’s not just about being abroad as a tourist. The key factors are immersion, cultural engagement, and adaptation. “It gets back to this idea of a deeper level of learning that’s necessary for these effects to occur,” says Adam Galinsky, a professor at Columbia Business School and the author of various studies on the connection between creativity and travel.

Furthermore, the perspective of experiencing something new every day sustained a very high level of motivation.

When a two week holiday, from a practical point of view, is not enough, we decided to try out a different model: workation. Our developers spend a month in Malaga, Spain – working effectively on customers’ projects, bonding with each other, practicing Spanish and diving into the rich and varied Andalusian culture. Everyone was truly amazed how easily and naturally the new work process within agile methodology was created. Furthermore, the perspective of experiencing something new every day sustained a very high level of motivation. In addition, access to the advice of senior developers had been rather limited; what resulted was wider independence and autonomy.

Travelling may also channel other neurological benefits too. Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, an associate professor of education and psychology at the University of Southern California, says that cross-cultural experiences have the potential to strengthen a person’s sense of self. Lots of psychological studies have proved that the ability to engage with people from different backgrounds helps strengthen self-development, assertiveness and effortless teamwork. This is as well as trust and a more humane attitude.

Happy and competent people make for successful e-sphere projects. We cannot think of a better way of taking care of our customers’ projects than by taking care of each other.

As we consider Malaga’s workation as a huge success, we cannot wait for many other group trips and destinations in the future.
